New Horizon Counseling is a private practice operated by a husband and wife pair, who offer mental and behavioral health services both in-person (Portage) and remotely to anyone in Michigan.
New Horizon offers clinical intervention and guidance for people struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD, grief/loss, self-esteem, communication issues between family members or partners, as well as parenting techniques for defiant and oppositional children.
I graduated in 2008 and 2009 with a bachelor’s and master’s degree, respectively, from Florida State University’s Social Work program. I moved to Michigan just after graduation, where I received my clinical license, and have fifteen years of experience in the mental health field that includes work in residential facilities for youth and home-based counseling services in Calhoun County for more than ten years. I have received training in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, trauma focused-cognitive behavioral therapy, love and logic parenting practices, 7-Challenges, and various other clinical interventions over that time.
During my time in Calhoun county, I worked primarily with youth ranging from 5 years old to 17 years old and their families. Over the last 5 years, my focus has started to shift more to older adolescents and adults. I have worked with children and adults who have struggles with depression, anxiety, ADHD, oppositional defiance, low self-esteem, life orientation, psychosis, and suicidality to name a few of the most common issues. I have a strong passion for helping to guide others through the stressors of life, particularly parents who are struggling with their children and their own emotional states when providing direction. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you; if I cannot be of service, then I will always work to help you find referrals to someone that hopefully can help.
I received my bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ferris State University in 2019 and my master’s degree in clinical social work from Western Michigan University in 2022. Upon graduation, I began working as a social worker for hospice care. From there, I transitioned to Van Buren Community Mental Health where I evaluated people looking for help to determine what clinical program would best serve their needs. I was also responsible for completing evaluations for psychiatric placement. I have received training in cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and other clinical interventions.
While working in hospice, I worked primarily with older adults and their families. Through my work at the Van Buren CMH, I also worked with older children, adolescents, and young adults. Throughout my career, the population that I have worked to help have struggled with grief and loss, depression, anxiety, suicidality, and eating disorders among other things. My prior work, as well as my own experiences, have given me a passion for helping others to navigate life’s challenges. I especially enjoy helping others who are struggling with grief and loss, who have experienced trauma, and those who are struggling with eating disorders.
